The experimental code wasn't working well and was causing problems with certain video cards. I removed it at Version 137. It looks like you will have to stay on the sidelines as it will be a while yet before we will meet your minimum requirements for 'even considering trying it out'.

You tell em Wayne! :sign_thanks:

Eldorado!
What is wrong with you? I suppose you wanted it yesterday and perfect. Maybe you should
step up and offer your services to make this software better. And Oh yeah! Do it for free
also. That right. This is freeware with no profit. All done by volunteers in their spare
time. You should be so lucky as to share your time with such a great body of people.

Steady on guys; ER is merely raising a valid 'point of interest' and I'm sure he understands that OR is evolving thanks to the spendid team involved. We all have our own 'points of interest', mine is carefully written out on a ream of fullscap sheets, both sides.

Shadows. For me the shadows in MSTS are just plain 'orrible. :sign_thanks: :good2: :good2:

As you only used a ream, I take it that your writing is extremely small. ;)

By today's standards maybe, but not for a late 1990's graphics engine.

While MSTS's shadows are not perfect, you don't have to go through the rigmarole of making a special shadow model like you do for RW and the end result can be 'interesting'.

Think, Electron Microscope.

The conflict with the shadowing code seems to occur mainly with NVidia cards, particularly those in the 6000 and 7000 series range. The Open Rails team is looking into a solution to address the problem.

Walter,

Thanks for explaining in more detail this issue to people such as myself. I am fortunate to have several older and newer video cards to compare/experiment with. I am well aware that there are many who still run setups with AGP cards such as the Nvidia's you mentioned and that OR is trying to be more inclusive with the user's hardware. I would have thoroughly enjoyed the chance to see how dynamic shadows worked on my PCIe ATI setup, which apparently was not a problem with the present OR code. I can guess that there will have to be two code bases to deal with the ATI/Nvidia issue. Please tell us what the developments are with this issue at your earliest convenience.

The current development code in OR has a new implementation of dynamic shadows, with a menu option to enable/disable it for any that have problems with their graphics card supporting it. It's still an early implementation and they're still stencil shadows, like MSTS, but we're able to do them with more detail already and there's plenty more improvements to be made.

They should be available for you to try out in the next public release.

Great news!

Speaking only for myself, this is wonderful news! I can now see my way to loading the next version of OR to finally see what it looks like.

When is this next release scheduled to make its appearance?

I can't promise anything, but we are looking to do a release soon.
