The Quick Pic Book on the K37 was received today from Karen's Books. The photos in it, plus those kindly provided by Nick, will be a great help.

Herb, one of Nick's photos shows a marker lamp side on......a BLUE glass lens colour is quite discernable, thus supporting my contention that blue + yellow bulb or flame = green light.

Old Ektachrome color shift. They were blueish green, not blue.

This was a digital photo. I can cruise over there (once the freakin' snow stops) and take another picture.

Thanks Nick, but no need.....there's a marker in one of the photos that's suitable for an example; may I crop this and post to show Herb?

Go for it. And if you need close-ups of anything else...

Getting the profile of the counterweights, the spokes and center wheelboss in proportion, was my task yesterday. I'm not satisfied I got the main link rod joining link right, so I'll have another fiddle later.

The odd shapes in the picture are place holder guides, so I can setup the various parts of the locomotive. They are removed later. The wheelset textures do not please me, so they will go through several changes, as usual.

I've been giving some thought to textures....not the artwork, it's too early for that, but to how many textures I should use. Advice says fewer the better, it saves draw calls, so I'm going to use at least one 2048x2048, which is the equivalent to four 1024 textures. No doubt I'll end up with the odd extra 1024 and 512 as well. I haven't notice this setup a problem in the past with MSTS or OR, but it pays to experiment and check.

At this early stage of the project, I have no idea of how the graphic artwork will fit on any particular texture, which is par for the course for me. A week of family matters has taken a very pleasant priority over modelling.

The next objects I'm going to model are the steamchest and cylinders. While I can take the measurements off the plan drawing, but it's inevitable that minor tweaking will be required to get the correct alignment of the cylinders in relation to the motion and valve gear. Walchaerts is always "fun" to setup and there's a nice feeling of achievement when you get it running smoothly. Currently, only the center section of the frames are in place, minus fittings. The lead and trailing bogies will be added once I make the front and rear sections of the frames. Unfortunately, the plans don't show a top down view of the chassis, nor a front view, showing the distance out from the centerline to each part, so I'll just have to tinker until it's right. This is no big deal, it just adds to that "fun" I mentioned earlier.

The cab will be built as a half model, cloned as a opposite and checked for reversed normals, then welded together into a single object. The cab probably won't include any internal details at this stage. The K37 has two turrent type objects, on top of the boiler, with a mass of details (hence more polys).

While I plan a single K37 model it can be cloned to give other road numbers....mixed heading can be done with the OR K27, or if you're brave, another K37.

Ditched the borrowed K27 mid frame section, in favour of building a complete frame set. I discovered other K37 drawings I'd forgotten about which will solve some matters.
