Mike has some great advice for all existing systems but I have never had a problem with XP Professional or with Win 7 Professional using the default Program Files location.
The trick is in the install process. There is a screen that pops up when you are loading Win 7 Pro (can't offhand remember the steps for XP, and I wish I had done a screencap of the pop up) that asks if you always want Windows to authenticate program installations, or words to that effect and it has a checkbox. I can't recall whether there is a checkmark in the box or not but if there is, take it out. If there isn't, put it in. This will pay dividends on any and all software you install, removing the authentication process.
Of course it only works on new installs. Once you have accepted the condition you're stuck with it unless you do a re-install. But without that intrusive program the computer becomes yours and is no longer controlled by what Micro$oft wants. ;)
