Like most D&RGW MOW cars, this car was converted from an unneeded 4000 series box car, and retained that number with an addition of a zero to designate non revenue service. It has served as a bunk car, bunk and living car, even served as a caboose, and ended it's active service as an Office Car.

This car has been painted both gray and red throughout its service and is presently colored gray.
It now resides on the Cumbries and Toltec Scenic railway and has recently been rebuilt by the Friends of the C&T.

This car was modeled from actual inspection and measurement and from plans in “D&RGW NG WORK/BOX OUTFIT CARS” by Steve Swanson and Mike Horner. All historical data is from this same publication. Howard Saunders performed file and texture tweaking, all lettering, and initial testing. Herb Kelsey performed additional testing and Tom Werb performed the final testing and provided the screen shot.
MSTS DENVER & RIO GRANDE GONDOLA #45399 REPAINT OF
SOUTHERN PACIFIC GENERAL SERVICE DROP-BOTTOM GONDOLA
G-50-10 CLASS, BUILT 1926.
3D Model and textures ©2007 by Tim Muir.
REPAINT SEPT 2, 2010

The SP car story is available with any of the SP GS Gondola downloads in Elvas Tower library.

The Model:

This model comes in two parts as is usual with my projects. A main shape file, named after the car's railroad owner, type and road number: RG_Gon_45399.s, and the "FA" or FreightAnim shape file that has the detail and load parts.

Along with the empty car model I've included three different types of loads. A lumber load, a coal load and a copper ore load. The wag files for each of these loads are in their own folders labeled as such. Just copy and paste the particular load wag file into the car folder, overwriting. It's that easy! Just don't cut and paste! You need a copy in their folders always.

The model comes with a 2048x2048 main ace file and a number of smaller auxiliary aces.

Hi all,
While searching the net, I found pictures in Pennsylvania of this covered bridge completely restored and painted red.
It's a 50 foot queen post bridge that has been covered. Reason for covering these smaller and larger bridges was to help keep the elements off in hopes of preserving the bridge itself.
There are quite a few of them scattered around the states. Some for auto traffic and some for rail travel.
This is my narrow gauge version of the same little bridge as it might have looked before the restoration. (circa 1890)

Have fun!
Helper Engine Files for the NP F-1 2-8-0's #56 and #70.
These files require the NA_Required sound folder which is FREELY available in the Train-sim.com File Library. Search File Libary for file named: na_req.zip

(The NA_Required sounds folder MUST be installed within the "TRAINSET" folder of your MSTS installation.)

Installing these files in your NP_F-1_2-8-0 Folder along with the NA_Required in the TRAINSET Folder, will let your helper engines chug at a different rate and with different sounds from your road engine, for a very enjoyable audio-visual experience, lost when diesels came onto the scene.

In your consist editor look for the "H_NP 2-8-0 No.56" and "H_NP 2-8-0 No.70" names for the helpers. Place helpers anywhere but the front, as the sounds lack bell and whistle wavs*.

My thanks to Andre Ming for doing these files for me.
*Note: There are no bell or whistle sounds for the Helpers. This is how they come using the NA_Required sources.
MSTS NP 40 TON DOUBLE SHEATHED BOX CAR 21516
Mesh and Textures ©2004,2010 by Tim MUir

This is an old repaint I found languishing in an old copy of the London & Port Stanley Trainset on an old computer. The model is from 2004, the repainted main ace from 2006.
The wags have been updated by Jim Bebenroth for better accuracy. I clarified the main ace .tga this week in PSP7. I figured I might as well share it now that the NP Consols are out.
The following information, credit the NPRHA Mainstreeter Magazine Volume 8-1:

The Northern Pacific's first 2-8-0s were the class F's, built in the early
1880's. Unfortunately, although built for the heavy grades in the mountains,
they had too low a factor of adhesion, only 3.85, making them very slippery
and next to useless for their intended service. NP went to Baldwin for a
better mountain loco, and the F-1's were the result, the Hogs had a much
better factor, 4.15 and a tractive effort of 34,500 pounds. They were among
the largest engines in the world at the time. In service, they could
handle 20 loads on a 2.2% grade, a huge improvement over former power.
Throughout their life, they were known system wide as "Hogs", even on train
orders!

They were delivered in 4 groups from 1888-1891 and numbered 470 to 497,
650 to 652 and 10,000. This was Baldwin's 10,000th engine and carried this
number for several years. It later became 460 and finally 55. One was built
as a Vauclain compound, and 2 more were converted in 1896. These proved to
be considerably more efficient in coal and water usage than their simple
sisters, but required more and specialized maintanance. They were simpled in
1903.

As delivered they carried Eames Vacuum brakes on the engine and tender.
These were removed in the late 90's, and standard air brake equipment was
fitted. Other changes over the years were cross compound pumps, dynamos and
electric headlights, a variety of tenders, taller stacks to improve
drafting, and sheet metal over the pretty woodwork on the cab sides. Their
final numbers were 50-81, assigned about 1900. No. 470, the first built,
became No. 70, the last in service, on the South Bend branch and finally in
Chehalis WA, 1946!

In 1923, No.'s 52, 59, 69, 71, 72, 74, and 79 were transfered to the SP&S
and used in switching service in the Vancouver/Portland area. 59 was later
sold to the Pacific States Lumber Co. near Selleck, WA. No. 51 was traded
to Polson Logging Co. for the Minnetonka, NP's first engine, which had seen
much use as "Betsy" on the western Washington Logging line.

The above info is mostly from the NPRHA issue on Hogs, Winter 1989. The
following is a direct quote from the article, done by Gary Tarbox, with
permission.

"Charlie Everest fired Hogs from 1918 through the 1920's and recalls what it
was like. " The Hogs were hard engines to work. The boiler back-head came
back to the gangway, separting the engineer and fireman. The engineer
normally sat forward by the center window in the cab and couldn't see the
fireman. The F-1 cab was very hot. You only had about two feet of clearance
in the cab along the side of the boiler where you sat on a jump seat. The
fireman had to go back through the narrow cab door to shovel coal. The
firebox door was so low that you had to bend way over to throw in a shovel
of coal. This made it hard to sling a scoop of coal to the front of the
grate, and thus made then hard to fire. The Hogs didn't have air-operated
doors so you just pulled the chain, left the door open and shoveled in the
coal, and the heat would come out at you."

I (Steve) have a personal connection with them through my Father. As a boy,
early in the depression, his uncle was an NP engineer/fireman, who worked
the South Bend switching job, near where Dad lived. So, Dad got many cab
rides, and as he got older, fired and ran the Hogs now and then. Later,
after WWII, Dad went to work for the NP as a brakeman, and retired from the
BN as an Amtrak conductor. He always had a soft spot for the Hogs, took some
good photos of the 70, and passed that liking on to me. Of course, he never
had to fire them in trying conditions!

At first they were assigned to mainline freight and helper work out of Livingston, Butte, Helena, Wallace, Lewiston, Ellensburg and Tacoma. In the early 1900's, they were relegated to secondary mainline trains and heavy branchline service. They worked the Wallace branch and the mines around Butte through the 20's, and on the Camas Prairie RR, jointly owned by the NP and UP. On the west coast, they saw much service hauling log trains on branch lines through the 30's. In the mid 30's, fifteen of the remaining seventeen Hogs were assigned to the Tacoma Division where they were mainly used in switching and occasional freight service on the Grays Harbor, and Willapa Harbor, Orting and Wilkeson Branches. Top operating speeds were in the 30-35 mph range.

No. 56 was on the Camas Prairie line in 1928, and was moved to the Tacoma division in 1934 and stayed there until scrapped in June of 1945.

No. 70 was also on the CP in 1928, moved to the Idaho Division in 1929 then Tacoma in 30, where she stayed till the end in April 1947.

The South Bend Branch left the Seattle Portland mainline at Chehalis Jct. near Centralia WA, heading west throught the coast range to it's far west end at South Bend WA, 56.5 miles away. Pluvias Hill was the biggest challenge, climbing east from the town of Lebam, over 600 feet in 10 miles. This nearly always required doubling the hill with trainloads of logs going inland. Raymond had 7 large mills and South Bend, 4 miles away had several more. This was one of the major timber capitols of the PNW, and prime switching territory for the 70.

Models created in Abacus Train Sim Modeler. These are high in polygon counts: The 56 is 29,622 for the main shape, 4,536 for the parts shape. The 70 is higher with the power reverser and other detail differences, at 30050 and 4688 respectively.

This model is dedicated to the memory and spirit of my late oldest brother, Paul Rey Muir (1949-2010), who would have loved this engine had he been here to run it. This one's for you, Paul!

Credits and thank yous:

Steve Thompson for supplying the drawings, photos, data and anecdotes.

Allen Norton for allowing me the use of his 3D driving wheel TSM files, and building excellent steam locos in TSM as a catalyst to get me to try my hand at one.

Jon Davis, Barry (Captain Bazza) Munroe, and Bill Pratt for further incentives towards building steam through much study of their models.

Chris Van Wagoner for his help with the locomotive physics, which made these locos come to life as true mountain hogs.

Jim Bebenroth for testing and positive input.

Herb Kelsey for engine file work, sounds and testing.

Whistle sounds (NP 5-chime) provided by Chris Signorelli & Bill Hobbs.

There's probably someone else I'm forgetting, please forgive me for it.

Thank you.
Canadian National wooden combine 7206 was assigned to the Thousand Islands Railway from the early to the late 1950s when it was replaced with a steel combine. The car was used to handle express packages
along with the odd passenger and replaced the TIR's combines as it had a larger baggage compartment.
It began it's MOW service as a “bunk and commissary” car, served as an office car, and then as a “water service”car. It was used by the contractor building the Navajo Dam, and is now at the Ridgway RR Museum.
I had the privilege of working on this car for an entire week in June 2010.
This car is unique in that it had two windows left of the side door on both sides, had end doors in both ends, and had a Murphy metal roof. It was the only work/box outfit car to retain the D&RG/D&RGW “button” herald throughout it's life.
MSTS Canadian National 77

Canadian National 77 is a 1930 Westinghouse "Vista Cab" built under contract by Canadian Locomotive Company in Kingston, Ontario. The unit was CNR's first diesel switcher, and from the late 1950s to the early 1960 was the spare power for the Thousand Islands Railway. In the early 1960s the unit was leased to Canada Starch in Cardinal, Ontario, and finally in the late 1960s the unit was retired and
donated to the Canadian Railway Museum in Delson, Quebec.

Created in TS-Modeler by Paul Charland. Coupler and air hose shapes by Tim Muir. Cab was cobbled together from passenger views combined with Tim Muir's Pacific Electric cab parts. Original ENG file by Dick Cowan. Sound files from Tim Muir's MaPa62 gas-electric model.
This file is the original layered artwork for the PE 1556. There are many layers for different layers of paintwork or effects. Bottom layer consists of background color. Second layer contains the backdrop drawing to build the artwork upon. Layers 3 through 6 have various paint/color effects. Layer 7 has the lines (board and plate edges, highlights and shadow edging), rivet and nut/bolt details. Lettering and numbers are on the top-most layer 8.
The PE inherited the ten units of the 1556-1565 class in the great Merger of 1911, which were built by predecessor "Old Pacific Electric" Ry in 1909. They were small critters, 32 feet between pulling faces, 18 foot wheel base, and just

12'-2" high to the top of the roof. Four of the ten had 4- 75hp motors and were used for light duties and switching. The remainder were fitted out with 4- 140hp motors and were used on mainline freight duties. The big Westinghouse L4

controllers meant that these units were never MU-capable. They were refurbished somewhat during World War 2, being among the first to receive the new black paint and white stripes and lettering used during the war. They lasted just a

couple of years post WW2, and were all gone by 1949, scrapped and burned at Torrance Shops.

Model built in TSMv1.1© by Abacus®, using official PE 2-view general arrangement drawings. Many railroad-specific parts had to be made by eye-ball "guess-timations". The cab view was built in 3D using Train Sim Model
er, posed, animated and photographed in Shape Viewer. Much help was freely given by Steve Thomas in getting the controller animations sorted out, and I thank him many times.

For the casual reskinner...

I only had one side on photo to work from and that was in the black scheme; so accuracy is dodgy...

Union Pacific had only 5 of these units. 1300 was delivered in 1945 and 1301-1304 arrived in 1947.
Best guess is that the louvre pattern was the same.

1300 was delivered in basic black with either white or aluminum pinstriping and lettering.
1301-1304 may have been delivered in the yellow/gray scheme ?

There is one document in the Docs folder with details on how to assemble the shape files and texture information.

You will need to do your own in depth research to accurately reproduce selected units of your choice.

Even though basic textures have been provided, you will still need to provide prototypical logos and lettering etc as necessary.

I can't stress enough to _please_ read the instructions in the Docs folder...

Hi all,
Here's another set of two NG boxcars, more for the mining aspects of your railroad this time, being only 16 feet long.
They have double doors to accommodate an 8' wide loading clearance with two 4' doors on each side.
Peeling paint, rusty hardware, bare wood, and also covered in dust, dirt and road grime gives these little guys a well used look.

This is a set of two boxes, one loaded and one empty. LD & MT respectfully.
There's a VIEWME.bmp file showing the difference between the two, before you get to re-skinnin' 'em that is.
Of course, equipped with link & pin couplers, archbar trucks, and mechanical brakes backdating it to the late 1800s.

Built to accommodate the new OR sim meaning, the poly count is a bit hight at 7,066.

Hope you enjoy this one...
There are issues with the All Weather Windows when using the headout view due to the field of view used by MSTS.
I suggest you do not use it. It won't crash MSTS but it is just not a realistic view.

Milwaukee Road had 24 Fairbanks-Morse H10-44's.

These were delivered over many years and many different details.

The H10-44's were originally numbered 1802-1819 later renumbered 760+ series
There are two documents in the Docs folder with details on how to assemble the shape files and texture information.
You will need to do your own in depth research to accurately reproduce selected units of your choice.
You will still need to provide Milwaukee Road logos and lettering etc as necessary.
Make yourself aware of the lettering layer and particularly the number template layer as sample numbers have been provided in all the required sizes.

There are many variations possible as several main and FA shape files have been provided and they can be combined in many ways to achieve a prototypical unit.

7 sample eng files have been included to help you along. These can be copied and modified for your units.
Sample textures have also been included so you can see how the diffeent models look in Shape Viewer.

This file contains three TSM .dst source files, being a freight animation file, a new complete shape file and a new testing file which was to have 3D carsides. There are also .bmp and .tga texture source files. Anyone familiar with TSM will have no problem working out how these files work.

Please feel free to use them any way you like, and please read the readme for further information. They are pretty complicated shapes and are fairly poly-intensive. Because of this, you'll need to run them through Polymaster2 to resolve the stabiity issues that bigger .s files have in the sim.

If you are going to upload files converted from these, I'd only ask that you let me know first. I have textures for other colour schemes as listed in the readme, and I can upload these if there is interest. I'm also contactable if you have any questions.

Some of the parts and textures are courtesy of Tim Muir, and I thank Tim for being a top bloke and a true friend.
Here's a 4 wheeled version of my Caboose 2 but also has been upgraded with rounder wheels, rounder links & pins, rounder brake wheels and some chain.
Polys are a bit high at 10,530 and will run in MSTS but was upgraded for the new Open Rails Sim just around the corner.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

When the City of London assumed control of the L&PS they breathed new life into its passenger
operations. By 1917 traffic had increased to the point where additional rolling stock was needed.
At that time the Pennsylvania Railroad were transitioning to an all steel passenger roster and
were selling off its wood bodied cars. L&PS management were able to purchase these four coaches,
No 13, 15, 17 and 19 used from the PRR for $4968 each. These class PK coaches, the ultimate
development in wood body cars, were 62 feet long with a capacity of 60 passengers. They didn't
have control stations, but the L&PS added MU cables to permit them to travel in the middle of a
train. The original cars had Pintsch Gas lighting. Electric lights were eventually installed, but
the Pintsch gas tanks and hardware remained.

They survived to the end of passenger operations on the L&PS and were finally scrapped in the
late 1950's.

BACKGROUND

Ordered in Nov 1915 from the Jewett Car Co of Newark Ohio
for $33,665.70 each, these all steel coaches were 71 feet
long weighing in at 55 tons. Ten feet longer than the
previous Jewett's ( No 2 - 10 ) and with a 72 passenger
capacity, they were claimed to be the largest interurban
cars operating in Canada. The cars were retired in 1957.
No 14 is at the Elgin County Railway Museum in St. Thomas
( 2006 ). No 12 was sold to Garnet Speers of Port Stanley
in 1960 and subsequently scrapped.

FEATURES
- high detail accurate representation of the prototype
- appropriate motor, contactor and compressor sounds
- working pantograph, wipers and headlight with sparks
- detailed cab view with animated controls and gauges
- left, right and headout views provided
- all views optimized for day and night viewing
- alternate eng files provided for MSTS Bin Patch 1.6.1022
available from http://www.volny.cz/j_vansa/eng/eng.html
this patch allows operation from both ends of the car

INSTALLATION

Make a folder in your trains\trainset directory called LPSNO12

Unzip the contents of this file to the new folder.

No 12 aliases the sounds from the KIHA31, 380 and HHP. For the sounds to work correctly you
must have the default MSTS KIHA31,380 and HHP engines installed.

Hi all,
These little 12' gondola are one of those 'in-the-field' conversions from a 12' flat car. Used mainly for local deliveries to a small township or rural area.
There's no dumping mechanism and all unloading was done manually with the proverbial 'acre spoon'. (Shovel)
The box is merely a 9'x7'x3' high structure and didn't hold all that much of a load. Still, a very dirty job, indeed.
Well, after all, it was in the 1800s...

This download will net you two cars as a set, each in their own folders, and you may install either or both as you wish. (One empty, one loaded.)
The empty version is shown here. The loaded version has a full coal load texture on it.
(Poly count is around 8,000)

INSTRUCTIONS:
Just unzip RAHGONSET.ZIP right into your TRAINSET folder if you'd like both cars installed. Otherwise, unzip to a temp folder to drag & drop the car of your choice into your TRAINSET folder.
