Both of these “flats” were made by removing the sides from “high side gondolas”. This was done to many gondolas and, being as there was no standard way of doing it, there were noticeable differences in the resulting flatcars. Some had the stake pockets removed, some cars had some stake pockets removed and some left in place, and some cars had rail added to the deck to strengthen them, Etc. These cares are sometimes referred to as “Gonflats”.
1515 was not built with conventional stake pockets but had large “U bolts” around the bottom of the stakes with a steel plate as a bearing plate. When the sides were removed the U bolts were left in place and the steel plate disposed of. 1567 had all stake pockets removed and had a length of rail clamped to the outer edge of the deck to help strengthen it against buckling under unusual loads.
Both of these cars are presently on the Cumbres and Toltec and located at Chama, NM. They are in very poor condition and hopefully will be rebuilt in the not too distant future. A picture of each is included in the ZIP file.
To install these models, create a new folder for each under your Trainset folder and copy the fist seven files into1515's folder and the last seven files into1567's folder. The JPEG pictures of the cars may be deleted if not wanted.
These models were made from official D&RG gondola drawings obtained from the "Maxwell Collection", and from dimensions measured by my self.
Initial testing, all tweaking and physics adjustments, and lettering was done by Howard Saunders, and final testing was done by Tom Werb and Andrew Greene. The photos are by Curt Bianchi and the screen shot is by Howard Saunders.
Enjoy
