PROTOTYPE

The "Ionia steam inspection car" is a vertical-boiler steam powered standard gauge track inspection car. It was built in the 1880's by the Ionia Steam Hand Car Co. of Ionia Michigan.
A small-bore, single-cylinder engine operated in one direction only. It was connected to the front axle with sprockets and a link belt.
The operator could turn the car around at a road crossing.
There is an article and sketch drawing in the April 26, 1889 "The Railway Gazette".

MODEL

This model is based on the Gazette drawing and a copyright protected article in the May 1988 "Model Railroader".
Inspiration was a static 1:12 scale model recently built by Gorden Birrell, a well-known master model builder.

Software used was 3DCrafter 9.5 Build 1693.

The inspection car is for OR only.

Engineers were generously provided by Tom Werb.
Two engineers. One sitting back enjoying the ride. The other one is reaching forward for the brake.

Textures are from the Internet and Textures.com.
