OPEN RAILS CB&Q S-4 and S-4-A Hudson 4-6-4's #3000, #3003, #3005, #3007, #4002, TENDERS, and CREWS

Engines are suitable for use as player driveable or in AI consists

These models have been constructed to represent how these engines would have appeared
from the 1930's when new to retirement in the 1950's.

The following historical and technical information is derived from the books:
"Steam Locomotives of the Burlington Route" by Bernard Corbin and William Kerka
"Burlington Bulletin" No. 33, "The S-4 Hudsons"

The 12 original engines of the CB&Q S-4 class 4-6-4's were were built by Baldwin in 1930 and were numbered 3000-3011. As built they were coal burners though two were converted to oil in the 1950's. These engines were built for high speed passenger service. In 1935 the CB&Q built an additional Hudson, 3012, at their shops in West Burlington. In 1937, 3002 was upgraded and given a streamlined shroud to become class S-4-A. As such she was renumbered to 4000 and became the original Aeolus to serve as backup power for the diesels assigned to the Zephyr trains. The upgrade also included a Boxpok main driver set, Alco lightweight roller bearing rods, and roller bearings in the Baker valve gear and all engine and tender axles. A final new S-4-A locomotive was built at West Burlington in 1938, numbered 4002 and also streamlined, bringing the total of Hudsons on the CB&Q up to 14. Though remaining unstreamlined, engines 3008, 3009, and 3011 were also upgraded to S-4-A's in 1938. All other Hudsons received lightweight rods and Boxpok main drivers and other upgrades during 1930-1940. These improvements allowed the trailing truck boosters to be removed in 1938-1940. By 1950 these engines could be found on secondary passenger trains, in commuter serivce, and even freight service. Regular service for these engines ended in the 1950's, though the 4000, 3003, and 3001 ran several excursions. The last Hudson excursion was pulled by 3001 in 1958. Hudsons 3001, 3003, 3006, 3007, and 4000 survived being scrapped and exist today on display.

Engine 3000 is modeled here when she was nearly new, as she would have appeared delivered from Baldwin. Engine 3003 represents the first phase of changes these engines went through in the 1930's with reinforced old-style Baker long valve gear frames and offset turbogenerator exhaust. Engine 3005 represents the 1950's with various upgrades and includes the Automatic Train Control (ATC) box on top of the boiler and Mars light above the headlight. Engine 3007 represents the 1940's era with new Baker long valve gear frames, lightweight alloy rods, later style Barco power reverse, and other differences. Lastly, Engine 4002 represents the S-4-A class with lightweight alloy roller bearing rods as she would have appeared in the 1940's to early 1950's before she was converted to burn oil.

MODELING INFORMATION:

Locomotive and Tender models created in 3DCrafter Professional Edition, Version 9.1.1 (Build 1256). Post Processing of shape file performed with Shapefixer File Version 0.1.0.39 by Paul Gausden. Textures created using MS Paint and Photoshop Elements 6.0, and converted to .ace format by TGATool2A and AceIt by Scott Miller.

NOTE: With the exception of numbering, these models were not designed with re-texturing in mind so repaints will be difficult if not impossible to accomplish. However, renumbering may be accomplished by editing the files CBQ3000nums.ace, CBQ3003nums.ace, CBQ3005nums.ace, CBQ3007nums.ace, and CBQ4002nums.ace .

INSTALLATION:

Unzip CBQORHudsons.zip to a temporary folder.

Move contents to ..\Train Simulator\ folder

Accept write overs if prompted, which will place a single engine consist for each locomotive in the CONSISTS folder and the "CBQORHudsons" Locomotive folder in the TRAINSET folder.

NOTES ON BUILDING CONSISTS WITH THE DIFFERENT ENGINE FILE TYPES SUPPLIED:

Included in this release are 2 types of locomotives to be used depending on their use as the lead or trailing / helper engine in a player controlled consist, or on an AI train. AI engines are supplied with different light specifications for automatic operation, and are not equipped with interior sounds or cab views. Player controllable or AI consists should be created as follows:

All positions in a Player or AI consist (lead, pusher, helper, etc): cbq3000.eng, cbq3000tend.wag

Engine Numbers 3003, 3005, 3007, or 4002 may be substituted in the example above.

NOTE: Engine files which contain "xtra" in their names denote those engines which have the class lights turned on. Engine files without "xtra" in their names have the class lights turned off.

SPECIAL FEATURES:

Engine 3005 has been configured so she can be customized by the end user. The Automatic Train Control (ATC) box and Mars light are included in the model as additional Open Rails Freight Animations. As such, she can be made and renumbered to represent those locomotives which received the Mars light without the ATC box on top of the boiler, with both the ATC box and the Mars light for Chicago commuter service, or with both removed as she would have appeared in the late 1940's prior to being assigned to commuter service.

Note that if the ATC box is removed, you will also need to remove the second Turbogenerator SteamFX entry in the engine portion of the .eng file. Likewise, if the Mars light is removed you will need to delete the Mars light entries from the Lighting section in the wagon portion of the .eng file.

OPEN RAILS NOTES:

I have made every effort to make these engines compatible with the additional parameters and improvements available in Open Rails version 1.2 at the time these models were submitted to the file library. I may or may not make updated .eng and .wag files available as improvements continue to be made to the Open Rails program, but primary responsibility for maintaining these files to correspond with future Open Rails development will lie with the end user.

If I have forgotten anyone I humbly apologize but know that I appreciate all the advice and inspiration I've received. I also must mention that the vast amount of information available on the forums regarding modeling for MSTS has been invaluable. The success I've had in making these models would not have been possible without drawing on the experience of so many others that have blazed the trail before!

Thank you all and hope you enjoy these models!
