OPEN RAILS CB&Q K-4 4-6-0's #710, #715, #919, TENDERS, 3D CABS, and CREWS

These models have been constructed to represent how these engines would have appeared in the 1940's to 1950'S.

The following historical and technical information is derived from the book "Steam Locomotives of the Burlington Route" by Bernard Corbin and William Kerka

The 24 engines of the CB&Q K-4 class were were originally built in the shops of the Burlington and Missouri River Railroad (B&MR) in Havelock, NE from 1900 to 1904, and intended for high speed passenger service having 72 inch drivers. They were later rebuilt for freight service and their drivers reduced to 64 inches diameter. A number of these engines including those modeled here worked their last days on branch lines throughout the CB&Q system. All were originally built as coal burners, though some like 919 were converted to burn oil. Some engines like 715 also received lengthened smokeboxes for burning Lignite coal. Engine 710 was originally B&MR 31 in 1901, renumbered to CB&Q 710 in 1904, and lastly 910 in 1951. Engine 715 was built as B&MR 44 in 1901, renumbered to CB&Q 715 in 1904, and finally 915 in 1951. Engine 919 was originally built in 1901 as B&MR 40, renumbered to CB&Q 719 in 1904, and lastly to 919 in 1951. The 900 series numbers were required to make way for new diesels being delivered to CB&Q subsidiary C&S which were taking the 700 series numbers. The last of these engines were retired and scrapped in the 1950's, with the exception of 710 (Lincoln, NE), 715 (Council Bluffs, IA), and 919 (Alliance, NE) being preserved with their former 700 series engine numbers.

MODELING INFORMATION:

Locomotive and Tender models created in 3DCrafter Professional Edition, Version 9.1.1 (Build 1256). Post Processing of shape file performed with Shapefixer File Version 0.1.0.39 by Paul Gausden. Textures created using MS Paint and Photoshop Elements 6.0, and converted to .ace format by TGATool2A and AceIt by Scott Miller.

NOTE: With the exception of numbering, these models were not designed with re-texturing in mind so repaints will be difficult if not impossible to accomplish. Renumbering may be accomplished by editing the files CBQ710nums.ace, CBQ715nums.ace, and CBQ919nums.ace .

INSTALLATION:

Unzip CBQORK4s.zip to a temporary folder.

Move contents to ..\Train Simulator\ folder

Accept write overs if prompted, which will place a single engine consist for each locomotive in the CONSISTS folder and the "CBQORK4s" Locomotive folder in the TRAINSET folder.

NOTES ON BUILDING CONSISTS:

Included in this release are 2 types of locomotives to be used depending on their use as the lead or trailing / helper engine in a player controlled consist, or on an AI train. AI engines are supplied with different light specifications for automatic operation, and are not equipped with interior sounds or cab views. Player controllable or AI consists should be created as follows:

All positions in a Player or AI consist (lead, pusher, helper, etc): cbq710.eng, cbq710tender.wag

Engine Numbers 715, or 919 may be substituted in the example above.

NOTE: Engine files which contain "xtra" in their names denote those engines which have the class lights turned on. Engine files without "xtra" in their names have the class lights turned off.

SPECIAL FEATURES:

Animated Cab Doors - The front cab doors are animated as left and right doors, and will function with the Open Rails door open / close commands.

Animated Cab Roof Vent - The vent on the top of the cab roof is animated as a mirror animation, and will open / close with the corresponding Open Rails commands.

3D Cab included - Fully functional with animated controls and gauges.

OPEN RAILS NOTES:

I have made every effort to make these engines compatible with the additional parameters and improvements available in Open Rails at the time these models were submitted to the file library. I may or may not make updated .eng and .wag files available as improvements continue to be made to the Open Rails program, but primary responsibility for maintaining these files to correspond with future Open Rails development will primarily be the responsibility of the end user.

Brandon Smith for providing the original .sms concept and inspiration for sound design, and the many of the sound files used.

Tom Werb for the use of his excellent "Tom's Crews" cab figures.

If I have forgotten anyone I humbly apologize but know that I appreciate all the advice and inspiration I've received. I also must mention that the vast amount of information available on the forums regarding modeling for MSTS has been invaluable. The success I've had in making these models would not have been possible without drawing on the experience of so many others that have blazed the trail before!

Thank you all and hope you enjoy these models!
