Elvas Tower: D&RG #5 Ouray - Elvas Tower

D&RG Locomotive #5, the “Ouray,” was a Baldwin”35 Class” 2-6-0 freight locomotive, builder’s number 2568, built in 1871. It weighed 35,000 pounds and developed 5,940 pounds of tractive force – more than adequate for the four wheel boxcars, flat cars and gondolas of the 1871 D&RG. Progress overtook her, however, and she was soon supplanted by the much larger 56 and 60 Class 2-8-0’s for mountain work. By 1880 she was leased out to a private owner and then she was sold in November of 1889, becoming Little Book Cliff Railroad #1.
The Locomotive was not equipped with air brakes of any kind as delivered and had to rely on handbrakes to control their trains.

This model is similarly equipped as the originals so keep the F9 screen activated to set handbrakes. These engines are particularly difficult to control when running lite. The four wheel tenders were short on brake power and the Johnson bar and steam in reverse motion frequently had to be used to control them. They will run like the wind but they're hard to stop!

This model was built with 3D Canvas (now called 3DCrafter), and was built from plans by Gary Caviglia, appearing in the Jan/Feb 2006 issue of The Narrow Gauge and Short Line Gazette
The initial testing, physics adjustments and graphics work was performed by Howard Saunders; Intermediate testing was done by Derek Miller; and final testing, physics adjustments, and upload packaging was performed by Herb Kelsey. To install this locomotive simply unzip the Ouray.zip file to your desktop and drag the TRAINS folder thus created to the root of your route's directory (where your current "TRAINS" and "ROUTES" folders are located). When your computer asks if you want to merge the new TRAINS folder with the old TRAINS folder say "Yes." Go enjoy your new engine.
