D&RG Locomotive #1, the “Montezuma,” was a Baldwin 2-4-0 built as their number 2459 in 1871. It was a “25 Class” locomotive, so designated because it weighed in at 25,000 pounds. Extremely small, even by narrow gauge standards, it developed only 3,580 pounds of tractive force and was intended for use in passenger service on the long stretches of relatively flat territory between Denver and Mexico City, hence the name. Of course the D&RG lost the battle for Raton Pass, its gateway to the south, to the Santa Fe and that pushed its fortunes into the rugged mountains. 25 Class locos were no match for the grades in those hills and by 1888 the “Montezuma” was off the roster, its boiler going to provide steam heat for the Salida hospital.
This model was built with 3D Canvas (now called 3DCrafter), and was built from plans by Gary Caviglia, appearing in the Jan/Feb 2006 issue of The Narrow Gauge and Short Line Gazette
The initial testing, physics adjustments and graphics work was performed by Howard Saunders; and final testing, physics adjustments, and upload packaging was performed by Herb Kelsey. As usual, the crew was supplied by Tom Werb. My thanks to these gentlemen for their contributions.
To install this locomotive simply unzip the Montezuma.zip file to your desktop and drag the TRAINS folder thus created to the root of your route's directory (where your current "TRAINS" and "ROUTES" folders are located). When your computer asks if you want to merge the new TRAINS folder with the old TRAINS folder say "Yes." Go enjoy your new engine.
And last, but not least, the screenie was supplied by Herb Kelsey.
Enjoy
