This download includes RGS_C-17_No42 for MSTS and RGS_C-17_No42-OR for Open Rails. For MSTS there are two shape files and a crew car, along with the tender, which are needed to load the entire locomotive into the simulator. For Open Rails only one shape file is necessary for the engine, the crew riding on a FreightAnim.
RGS C-17, No. 42 was built by Baldwin as a 70 Class 2-8-0 for the Denver & Rio Grande in 1887 as their number 420. In 1916 she was sold to the Rio Grande Southern as their number 42. Although the C-17 was deemed as too small by the Rio Grande, most of their members of the class having been scrapped by the mid 1930’s, she was a well-liked locomotive among the RGS enginemen. 42 had the dubious distinction of being one of the locomotives used to scrap the line and, as such, was the last locomotive to be used on the railroad, making a final run in 1953. The cosmetically restored engine survives and is a part of the railroad museum at the Durango & Silverton Narrow Gauge in Durango, Colorado.
These models were built from historical data from The Rio Grande Southern Railroad, by Josie Moore Crum, RGS Story, Vol. XII, Dell A. McCoy, et al, and from issues of the “Galloping Goose” newsletter of the Rio Grande Southern Historical and Technical Society.
These models were built by a team of five people. Howard Saunders did most of the initial physics; Herb Kelsey was a source of technical data and pictures, and did file adjustments and final testing; Derek Miller did detailed technical inspections of the model; Tom Werb, supplied the customized crew.; and I stuck pieces together and swept the shop floor. It was built using 3D Canvas (now 3D Crafter), which I recommend highly.
The screenie was provided by Herb Kelsey.
To install, unzip the attached file to your desktop, or the temporary location of your choice. This will produce a folder named “TRAINS.” Open your Train Simulator folder where your TRAINS folder is located and drag the new “TRAINS” folder into the Train Simulator folder. When it asks you if you wish to overwrite files, select “Yes to all.” This will install the locomotive and tender for both systems and the crewcar for MSTS, as well as Consists for both MSTS and Open Rails engines. The Trains/Consists folder will have new consists entitled “RGS42Lite.con.” and “RGS42Lite-OR.con.” In addition to the basic locomotive with headlight and class lights lit for an extra train, you will also have “Helper” and “Passenger” versions of the 42 for MSTS. The “Helper” version will feature full exhaust when not being driven and the “Passenger” version has the unlit classification lights of a scheduled train. For Open Rails you have a basic locomotive running extra and a “Passenger” version. There is no need for a separate helper engine in Open Rails as all engines exhaust and are controllable.
Note – This documentation and the download files are both new, and replace the original ones uploaded on 17 May 2014. The main purpose in this reissue is to provide separate models optimized for both MSTS and OR. At the time of this uploading 67 copies of the original have been downloaded.
