There was a major shortage of cabooses during the war years, 1941-1945, and many American railroads turned to alternate sources for these crew cars. Some used converted coaches or combines. Others used boxcars. This model is of the latter , seven of which were built by Pacific Electric, and numbered in the 1920-1926 series. PE continued to operate these boxcar-cabooses after the war until the 1950's.
