Elvas Tower: RGS C-19 Locomotive 40, 1937 version - Elvas Tower

RGS C-19, No. 40 was built by Baldwin as a 70 Class 2-8-0 for the Rio Grande in 1881 as their number 411. She, along with four other sisters, was converted into a standard gauge 0-8-0 in 1888 by setting the boiler on a widened frame and renumbered to 802. in 1898 the D&RG had sufficient standard gauge power and the engines were rebuilt back into the 70 Class with new frames and engines and the 802 became the 2nd 402. In 1916 she was reboilered and subsequently sold to the Rio Grande Southern as their number 40, becoming a well liked locomotive among the RGS enginemen. She was wrecked with No. 20 in 1943, rolling over near Cima. Her boiler was severely damaged so she was scrapped.

This model was built by combining parts from several C-19 models that had been made from basic C-19 plans from Ken Pruitt and Harry Sherman. Many details were changed, or added, using photos from many sources as a guide. Most of the historical data comes from The Rio Grande Southern Railroad, by Josie Moore Crum, RGS Story, Vol. XII, Dell A. McCoy, et al, and from issues of the “Galloping Goose” newsletter of the Rio Grande Southern Historical and Technical Society.

This model was built by a team of five people. Howard Saunders did most of the initial physics, file and texture adjustment, and testing; Herb Kelsey decided which components to use from the donor models, was a source of technical data and pictures, and did file adjustments and final testing; Derek Miller did detailed technical inspections of the model; Tom Werb, supplied the customized crew.; and I stuck pieces together and swept the shop floor. It was built using 3D Canvas (now 3D Crafter), which I recommend highly.

To install, unzip the attached file to your desktop, or the temporary location of your choice.  This will produce a folder named “TRAINS.”  Open your Train Simulator folder where your TRAINS folder is located and drag the new “TRAINS” folder into the Train Simulator folder.  When it asks you if you wish to overwrite files, select “Yes to all.” This will install the locomotive and tender. Use the “Crew Car” from the 1937 version of 41. The Trains/Consists folder will have a new consist entitled “40 Lite 1937.” In addition to the basic locomotive with headlight and class lights lit for an extra train, you will also have “Helper” and “Passenger” versions of the 40. The “Helper” version will feature full exhaust when not being driven and the “Passenger” version has the unlit classification lights of a scheduled train.
