MSTS WESTERN PACIFIC 0-6-0 SWITCHERS #165, #163, TENDERS, AND CREW CARS

ENGINES PROVIDED IN 3 TYPES - PLAYER DRIVEABLE, HELPER (DOUBLE HEAD OR PUSHER SERVICE),
AND AI

These models have been constructed to represent how these engines would have appeared
in the 1940's TO 1950'S.

The following historical and technical information is derived from the books
"Steam Locomotives of the Western Pacific" by Stephen M. Hayes, 2010, and
"Western Pacific Steam Locomotives, Passenger Trains, and Cars"
by Guy L. Dunscomb and Fred A. Stindt, 1980:

The Western Pacific purchased these 0-6-0 Switchers built by Alco in 1915 (#163) and 1919 (#164-#166). These engines were originally built for the United Verde Copper Company in Arizona and purchased by the WP in 1927. The WP added power reverse gear in 1938-1939, otherwise the engines were changed very little from the time the WP acquired them. Though originally coal burners, all were oil burners while on the WP. #165 is being restored to operation at the Western Pacific Railroad Museum in Portola, CA, and #164 is on display near the WP depot in Oroville, CA. #163 and #166 were scrapped.

Specificaions:

Type: 0-6-0 Wheel Arrangement
Boiler: 180 psi, oil burning
Cylinder Bore and Stroke: 26" x 21"
Valve Gear: Indirect Walschaerts
Driving Wheels: 51" Diameter
Locomotive Total Weight Loaded: 262,500 lbs.
Weight on Drivers: 160,000 lbs.
Tractive Effort: 34,400 lbs.

Special Thanks go to J. Chris Allen and Eugene Vicknair at the Western Pacific Railroad Museum in Portola, CA, and these models are dedicated to them and the rest of the team working to restore the real 165 to operation. Chris Allen's photographs of their restoration efforts were invaluable during the building of these models, including being the photo of the builder plate. I encourage everyone to visit the museum website and 165 restoration blog at www.wplives.org and wprrsteam.blogspot.com if you'd like to see what they're doing, and if you're able lend a hand or make a donation to support their efforts!

MODELING INFORMATION:

Locomotive and Tender models created in 3DCrafter Professional Edition, Version 9.1.1 (Build 1256). Post Processing of shape file performed with Shapefixer File Version 0.1.0.39 by Paul Gausden. Textures created using MS Paint and Photoshop Elements 6.0, and converted to .ace format by TGATool2A by Scott Miller.

NOTE: With the exception of numbering, these models were not designed with re-texturing in mind so repaints will be difficult if not impossible to accomplish. Renumbering may be accomplished by editing the files WP163nums.ace and WP165nums.ace .

INSTALLATION:

YOU MUST HAVE MSTS BIN INSTALLED FOR THESE MODELS AND THEIR LIGHTS TO WORK CORRECTLY. BIN IS ALSO REQUIRED FOR CAB SWITCHING BETWEEN PLAYER AND HELPER LOCOMOTIVES. All files needed to run this engine are included, no additional downloads are required.

Unzip WP060s.zip to a temporary folder.

Move contents to ..\Train Simulator\ folder

Accept write overs if prompted, which will place a single engine consist in the Consists folder and
the locomotive folder in the Trainset folder

NOTES ON BUILDING CONSISTS WITH THE DIFFERENT ENGINE FILE TYPES SUPPLIED:

Included in this release are 3 types of locomotives to be used depending on their use as the lead or single engine in a consist (player), helper / pusher in a consist, or on an AI train. The sound files have been configured to achieve correct engine sounds for the locomotives in each of these cases, as long as the correct .eng file is used. The .eng files to use for these different applications is as follows:

Lead / single engine in Player consist: WP165.eng, WP060-CrewCar1, and WP165Tend.wag
Trailing Helper or Pusher in Player consist: WP165Help.eng, WP060-CrewCar1, and WP165Tend.wag
AI consist in any position: WP165AI.eng, WP060-CrewCar1, and WP165Tend.wag

Engine Number 163 and WP060-CrewCar2 may be substituted in the examples above.

SPECIAL FEATURES:

The roof hatch of the cab is animated as a mirror animation and may be opened / closed at any time by pressing CTRL + NumPad 8

The front cab doors and side windows are also animated and may be opened / closed while stopped by pressing either CTRL + NumPad 7 or CTRL + NumPad 9

Texturing and Modeling Advice (from elvastower.com forums): Rick (thegrindre), Tim Muir, Dave Nelson, Bill Pratt, Alexey Soljenitchev, Fleegle411, Allen Norton, and Herb Kelsey.

Providing my "I can do that" moment: Scott (scottb613 at elvastwer.com forums) and his "big dog - birth of a steam locomotive" series.

Inspiriation and Encouragement: All listed above and those at the elvastower.com forums, both in the thread of the construction of these models, and inspiration from other models I have admired.

Herb Kelsey for his help in reviewing technical details of the construction of the models, and refinements to the .eng and .wag file variables.

Initial Testing and positive input: Herb Kelsey, Tim Muir, Mike Long, Philip Michlian

Brandon Smith for providing the .sms concept and the majority of the sound files used

Tom Werb for the use of his excellent "Tom's Crews" cab figures

If I have forgotten anyone I humbly apologize but know that I appreciate all the advice and inspiration I've received. I also must mention that the vast amount of information available on the forums regarding modeling for MSTS has been invaluable. The success I've had in making these models would not have been possible without drawing on the experience of so many others that have blazed the trail before!

Thank you all and hope you enjoy these models!
