MSTS WESTERN PACIFIC 2-6-6-2 "LITTLE MALLIES" #201, #203, #207, #210, AND TENDERS

ENGINES PROVIDED IN 3 TYPES - PLAYER DRIVEABLE, HELPER (DOUBLE HEAD OR PUSHER SERVICE),
AND AI

MSTS BIN REQUIRED! CORRECT OPERATION REQUIRES CAB SWITCHING - REFER TO SPECIAL OPERATING NOTES BELOW FOR DETAILS

These models have been constructed to represent how these engines would have appeared
in the 1940's and 1950'S.

The following historical and technical information is derived from the books
"Steam Locomotives of the Western Pacific" by Stephen M. Hayes, 2010, and
"Western Pacific Steam Locomotives, Passenger Trains, and Cars"
by Guy L. Dunscomb and Fred A. Stindt, 1980:

The Western Pacific purchased two batches of 2-6-6-2 compound articulateds 1917 to 1924.

#201 and #203 are from the first batch ordered (numbers 201-205) from Alco-Dunkirk in 1917. #207 and #210 are from the second batch ordered (numbers 206-210) from Alco-Richmond in 1924. As delivered these engines did not have Elesco feedwater heaters, or supplemental front air reservoirs. The Elesco feedwater heaters were added in the late 1920's and early 1930's, and the front air reservoirs were added beginning in the late 1920's. All engines were oil burners. The original 10,000 gallon water capacity tenders were enlarged to 12,000 by the WP from 1930 to 1931. The "Little Mallies" as they were known first served in the Feather River Canyon until the larger 2-8-8-2's arrived. After this they transferred to the NCE running between Keddie and Bieber until the end of their service lives. All were retired by October 1952 and sadly all were scrapped.

MODELING INFORMATION:

Locomotive and Tender models created in 3DCrafter Professional Edition, Version 9.1.1 (Build 1256). Post Processing of shape file performed with Shapefixer File Version 0.1.0.39 by Paul Gausden. Textures created using MS Paint and Photoshop Elements 6.0, and converted to .ace format by TGATool2A by Scott Miller.

NOTE: With the exception of numbering, these models were not designed with re-texturing in mind so repaints will be difficult if not impossible to accomplish. Renumbering may be accomplished by editing the file WP201nums.ace, WP203nums.ace, WP207nums.ace, or WP210nums.ace

*****************************************************************************************

INSTALLATION:

YOU MUST HAVE MSTS BIN INSTALLED FOR THESE MODELS AND THEIR LIGHTS TO WORK CORRECTLY. MSTS BIN IS ALSO REQUIRED FOR CAB SWITCHING BETWEEN PLAYER AND HELPER LOCOMOTIVES. All files needed to run these engines are included, no additional downloads are required.

Unzip WP2662s.zip to a temporary folder.

Move contents to ..\Train Simulator\ folder

Accept write overs if prompted, which will place single engine consists for each locomotive in the CONSISTS folder and
the locomotive folder in the TRAINSET folder

NOTES ON BUILDING CONSISTS WITH THE DIFFERENT ENGINE FILE TYPES SUPPLIED:

Included in this release are 3 types of locomotives to be used depending on their use as the lead or single engine in a consist, helper / pusher in a consist, or on an AI train. The sound files have been configured to achieve correct engine sounds for the locomotives in each of these cases, as long as the correct .eng file is used. The .eng files to use for these different applications is as follows:

Lead / single engine in Player consist: WP201f.eng, WP201r.eng, and WP2662Tend.wag
Trailing Helper or Pusher in Player consist: WP201f.eng, WP201rhelp.eng, and WP2662Tend.wag
AI consist in any position: WP201fAI.eng, WP201rAI.eng, and WP2662Tend.wag

Engine Numbers 203, 207, or 210 may be substituted in the examples above.

WP2662Tendd.wag is slightly dirtier in appearance and is best suited for use with #203 and #210

NOTE: Alternate front engines are also provided that include the front mounted snow plow. The front .eng's which have the snow plow present have "plow" in their names (example WP201fplow.eng) and can be substituted if you wish.

NOTE: Engine files are also supplied if you want to run with the white "extra" class lights turned on by substituting the .eng files that contain "xtra" in their names into the consist of your choice.

NOTE: When running multiple engines in a train, I highly recommend building your consist with the player engine placed where you intend to operate the train from. If you plan to operate the train from the front, place the player driveable (non-help) engine first in the consist with the others being "helpers". If you plan to operate the train from the rear pusher, or in the middle, place the player driveable engine there with the others in the consist, including the front, as "helpers".

ALTERNATE SOUNDS AVAILABLE IN THE SOUND FOLDER:

Some of you may have a preference in whether or not
you want to always hear the open cylinder cock hiss
when you start the engines. I have provided two
versions of the .sms files so you can use the version
you prefer. In the sound folder are two other folders:

"Cyl Cock Hiss"

and

"No Cyl Cock Hiss"

The engines are originally installed using the .sms
files that have the cylinder cock hiss sound present.
If you want to try the models without the cylinder cock
hiss sound, simply copy the files from the
"No Cyl Cock Hiss" folder into the Sound folder.

If you want to have the cylinder cock hiss sound back again,
simply copy the files from the "Cyl Cock Hiss" folder into
the sound folder.

SPECIAL OPERATING NOTES:

This model has been built as a true articulated, with the front and rear engines being separate engines. For the model to load in the SIM, it is required that the front engine must have a cab view, which is where you'll begin when the SIM starts. HOWEVER, these engines will ONLY operate correctly when operated from the cab of the rear engine. To switch cabs to the rear engine:

1 - Apply the train brake
2 - Release the engine brake
3 - Press "F9" to bring up the consist window
4 - Click on the second engine back in the consist window (the "rear" engine ahead of the tender)
5 - Press "1"

You will now have the correct cabview that does not move with the front engine, and all engine sounds will function correctly.

*** Special Features ***

The smoke deflector on the stack is animated and can be operated at any time by pressing CTRL + Number Pad "8"

A passenger view is also included for the brakemans cabin on the tender.

Texturing and Modeling Advice (from elvastower.com forums): Rick (thegrindre), Tim Muir, Dave Nelson, Bill Pratt, Alexey Soljenitchev, Fleegle411, Allen Norton, and Herb Kelsey.

Providing my "I can do that" moment: Scott (scottb613 at elvastwer.com forums) and his "big dog - birth of a steam locomotive" series.

Inspiriation and Encouragement: All listed above and those at the elvastower.com forums, both in the thread of the construction of these models, and inspiration from other models I have admired.

Herb Kelsey for his help in reviewing technical details of the construction of the models, and refinements to the .eng and .wag file variables.

Initial Testing and positive input: Herb Kelsey, Tim Muir, and Mike Long

Brandon Smith for providing the .sms concept and the majority of the sound files used

If I have forgotten anyone I humbly apologize but know that I appreciate all the advice and inspiration I've received. I also must mention that the vast amount of information available on the forums regarding modeling for MSTS has been invaluable. The success I've had in making these models would not have been possible without drawing on the experience of so many others that have blazed the trail before!

Thank you all and hope you enjoy these models!

******** WP2662soundfix.zip UPDATE ********

It has been noted, courtesy of Pinpuller here on the ET forums that I accidentally left out 6 .wav files from SOUND folder in the original download for the WP "Little Mallies". The WP2662soundfix.zip download contains the missing .wav files so you can update your original download if you downloaded and installed the engines prior to 12/11/2012.

Unzip the file "WP2662soundfix.zip" and unzip the file to a temporary location. Inside you will find a folder called SOUND which you can copy and paste into the WP2662s TRAINSET folder. Accept write-overs if prompted and the missing sound files will be added.

The original WP2662s.zip file has been updated to include the missing files, so if you're downloading the engines after 12/11/2012 you do not need to download and install the WP2662soundfix.zip file.
