And to: Steve Thomas for his fantastically
detailed Baldwin builder plates.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------
And to: Tom Werb for his "Toms Crews" crew members caricatures.

SOME HISTORY: (Excerpt from "Iron Horses of the Santa Fe Trail)
"By 1919, the Santa Fe realized the need for a larger and more modern
heavy freight locomotive. In the the years intervening since it had
pioneered the 2-10-2 type, the philosophy dictating the elements of
the design had become completely altered, and the 3800 Class owes little
to its earlier sisters. These large, modern engines were more an extension
of the Mikado type by an additional driving axle than they were a
derivative of the 900 and 1600 Class. "From 1919 through 1927, the 3800
Class was the standard heavy freight power on the system....
The road owned a total of 140 locomotives of this class...The Santa Fe Type
served its owner and originator very well."
----------------------------------------------------------------------
This locomotive as modeled is a representative of a oil burning 2-10-2 of
the series 3830-3849 which carried a "Hodges" trailing truck. No. 3840 was
built in 1921 by the Baldwin Locomotive Works and carried builder's number
54924. With a weight on 63" drivers of 320,000 lbs, a total weight of 396,900
lbs, boiler pressure of 220 PSI and a tractive force of 85,360 lbs, it was
capable of handling 1200 tons up the 2.2% grades of Cajon Pass and equally
adept at handling other grades, particularly in tandem with others of her class.
It is modeled here as it appeared in the 1940's, with its 15,000 gallon oil
tender. 3840 survived until 1954
